As of now, many entities in the member-states do not fulfil the environmental standards that the EU has agreed upon. The attempt to simplify the reporting processes risks driving us further away from protecting European biodiversity and de-accelerating climate change; thus, it is not the right solution.
The implementation of such changes to policy might put a plethora of other EU nature protection and restoration regulations at risk of being amended at the price of the well-being of the European natural environment. Additionally, the change of current regulations may strongly benefit multinational enterprises, which, as a consequence, will be held accountable to an even lower degree than before with regard to the destruction of nature.
As an organisation representing young environmental advocates in the Nordic and Baltic Sea region, we strongly oppose any simplification or streamlining of administrative requirements that have the potential to weaken existing environmental regulations in the areas of waste, products, and industrial emissions. We believe that renegotiating the laws that currently protect our environment and climate with the intent to simplify them highly risks taking away crucial responsibility from businesses, and will significantly weaken or even jeopardise regional efforts for a just, sustainable transition and the implementation of the European Green Deal.
ReGeneration 2030 is a democratic and youth-led organisation, mobilising youth climate activists and movements from the Nordic and Baltic Sea region. Want to join us? Fill out a volunteer application form here.
