For the first time ever, a European Commissioner in office will visit the autonomous Åland Islands as Virginijus Sinkevičius attends the ReGeneration Week on the 28th-31st of August 2021. His attendance at the event marks an important milestone for ReGeneration 2030 and is a clear call for action to other decision makers.
The ReGeneration Week is an open meeting place for youth to learn more about today's global challenges and is a powerful platform for change, intending to have large attendance and outreach in cooperation with other actors, such as the United Nations Environment Programme and Stockholm Environment Institute. The theme for the event this year is “ReThinking the system”, which highlights the need for a fundamental green recovery after the pandemic.
Virginijus Sinkevičius is the youngest person ever to serve as an European Commissioner. He holds the important Environment, Oceans and Fisheries portfolio within the Commission and is hence one of the most influential politicians when it comes to making Europe a more sustainable continent. Coming from Lithuania, he is very well aware of the specific challenges the Baltic Sea region is facing.
“We are delighted to finally be able to welcome a European Commissioner to our autonomous islands and it makes me extra happy to see that Commissioner Sinkevičius has decided to join the engaged youth from the ReGeneration 2030 movement to discuss our common, future challenges. I am very much looking forward to being able to show him in practice how we work with our prize-winning sustainability agenda.” - Veronica Thörnroos, head of the Åland Government.
Sinkevičius' attendance at the ReGeneration Week 2021 is an important milestone for the ReGeneration 2030 movement. The Commissioners attendence sends a strong message to other decision makers to follow in his footsteps.
”The time has come for decision makers to step up and to show their solidarity and support for the youth who’s pushing for change. We are overly excited that one of the most important political leaders in Europe when it comes to addressing our future challenges has decided to join the ReGeneration week and we can’t wait to discuss how we together can ‘ReThink the system.” - Bára Örk Melsted, Chair of the ReGeneration 2030 foundation, concludes.
